5 Tips to Help Your In-Home Newborn Session Run Smoothly
Your home doesn’t need to be magazine-perfect. Your baby doesn’t need to be on a schedule. And you? You don’t need to do anything except be together.

Those first days can feel a little shaky — you’ve just had a baby, you’re healing, and you’re still adjusting to new rhythms and routines. That’s the beauty of in-home newborn photography — it’s slow, natural, and entirely built around your family’s pace.
But if you’re wondering how best to prepare, here are five thoughtful tips that make a world of difference:
- Tidy just a few corners – Choose 2–3 spots where natural light pours in—your bedroom, the nursery, or the lounge. These are our main backdrops. Don’t stress about the rest. I can always move a few things if needed.
- Keep little tummies happy – If you have young children, have a few non-messy snacks ready that they love (think crackers, fruit, or a favourite biscuit). It helps everyone stay calm and content—especially during those quiet newborn moments.
- Prepare a simple meal for after – Sessions can take a little longer than expected. We pause for feeds, nappy changes, snuggles—and that’s completely normal. Having something ready for lunch or a warm meal post-session can make the rest of your day feel easier.
- Let baby lead – We follow your baby’s rhythm. Whether they’re wide-eyed or sleepy, fussy or peaceful—it all photographs beautifully. These moments, just as they are, become part of the story we’re capturing together.
- Dress in soft, comfy layers – I’ve got you covered — one less thing off your list. I have a selection of feeding-friendly dresses for mums and sweet, timeless pieces for little ones, all ready to borrow from my Client Wardrobe. If choosing outfits feels overwhelming, you don’t need to worry.

This is such a fleeting, precious season. Let’s document it gently, in the comfort of your own space—just as it is, and just as you are.
