5 Tips for a Smooth Family Photoshoot (Even With Wild Kids)
Let’s be real—asking kids to stay still and “smile nicely” during a photoshoot is a bit like expecting them to leave every puddle untouched on a rainy day. It’s possible, but highly unlikely. And honestly? That’s not the goal.
But here’s the beautiful truth: the best images aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed. They’re the ones where you’re wrapped up in a cuddle, mid-laugh, or brushing the hair from your child’s face as they wriggle away giggling. The moments that feel like your family.

So, if you’re getting ready for a session (and maybe feeling a little nervous), here are five simple tips to help things flow a little easier:
1. Full bellies = happy hearts
A proper meal before your session is so important—something nourishing and filling to keep everyone steady. Especially if you have little ones under three, it’s a great idea to keep a non-messy snack tucked in your bag. It can do wonders mid-shoot, offering just enough fuel to keep their spirits up without breaking the moment. Avoid anything overly sweet or sticky—we want hands free for cuddles and play!
2. Rested little bodies
If you can, keep the day leading up to the session as gentle as possible. Avoid big outings or a packed schedule. Prioritise a good nap or quiet rest time so they’re not running on empty. A well-rested child is far more likely to feel comfortable and connected—and that’s where the most beautiful, true-to-them moments unfold.
3. Let them know what to expect
Even little ones feel more confident when they know what’s coming. In the days before your session, chat to them—show them photos of you together, laughing, cuddling, running barefoot in the sand. Tell them why this matters. Share what you want to remember about them right now… their cheeky grin, the way they hold your hand, that little freckle on their nose. Let them feel how loved they are. When they know it’s not about sitting still but having fun together, they show up with open hearts. And that connection? It shines.
4. Trust the process
You’ve done everything you could—planned the outfits, packed the snacks, talked them through it. Now it’s time to let go. To step into this space and just be. You don’t have to manage the moment. I’ll hold it gently for you. This is where the real magic happens—in the letting go, the surrender, the trust. I’ve got you.
5. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
It’s a chance to take it all in—to slow down and truly see each other. Tuck their hair behind their ear. Whisper something soft or silly. Run, spin, giggle, hold on tight. Let this time be about connection—talk, play, simply be together. The most beautiful images aren’t posed; they’re felt. Your only job is to love your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
